Hacks for storing baby clothes as keepsakes
Staring at jumbled piles of baby clothes can be overwhelming! Where do you go with it all? Especially if saying goodbye to your beloved keepsakes is not on the cards right now. We’ve got your back, mama!
From decluttering and organising to packing like a pro, check out these hacks that can help you properly store your keepsakes.
Declutter
There are often many clothes you didn’t love, your kids didn’t love, or maybe they just grew out of the clothes before they could wear them. Either way, go through all clothes and create piles: donate, keep and sell.
Pro Tip: if you have any stained clothing you'd still like to keep, watch this tutorial - it'll help pull those stains right out.
Pack Carefully
- Remove any metal buttons or fasteners from clothes before storing them. Metal corrodes over time which can leave rust stains on clothing
- Consider packing items according to gender, size, type and season
- Remember to lay clothing flat instead of folding it to avoid difficult creases forming - which are hard to get rid of later
- If you fold clothes, fold them along the existing seams to avoid creases
- Put shoes, jackets, socks, underwear and hats in totes before placing them into the containers - for extra protection from dust
- Consider purchasing moth balls to be thrown in with the clothes – especially if you’re storing them for a long time
- It’s a good idea to inspect clothes yearly for stains and damages so you can fix them earlier rather than later
- Remember to label all your boxes or bins - so you don’t have to scratch through everything when looking for items later
Choose containers wisely
Storage bins
Consider investing in plastic storage bins with snap lids. Experts recommend purchasing containers made of cast polypropylene as it’s safer for archival purposes.
Storage bags
If you’re looking to save space which is why plastic bins might not work for you, consider vacuum-packed plastic bags.
Pro Tip: If you want to preserve certain baby items such as heirlooms (i.e., baptism dresses), purchase archival garment storage boxes.
Ornament boxes
Baby apparel often comes in sets, such as matching tops and bottoms. Solve the problem of endless searching for a matching set by utilising ornament boxes - they already come with little squared-off sections.
Shoe organisers
A hanging shoe organizer is an excellent way to store clothing items if you have limited space. And it can hang on a simple hook at the back of a door or on a wall. Make sure you place clothes in plastic bags first to avoid dust.
If you don’t have room to store baby keepsakes, consider renting a self storage unit with Store Stuff. Whether you’re looking to store long-term or short-term, our teams on the ground will ensure your items stay safe and secure until you need them again.
